compact-duplicate

A rule that is off by default: it reports a compact line that restates an earlier one: half or more of its content words and every negation, condition, scope and order word the same once a decisions table turns it on.

What it catches

A compact line that restates an earlier one: half or more of its content words and every negation, condition, scope and order word the same.

Dimension

economy: words that carry nothing. A finding is counted on the dimension of its rule, the cost it names to the reader.

Why

Anthropic's skill guidance asks for the smallest set of high-signal tokens and one term per idea, and a restated line spends its tokens twice. The rewrite of the shipped skills to the floor merged lines like these by hand. A line restates another only when its negation, obligation, scope, condition and order words match too, since those are what a merge must keep. Run over the lines that rewrite left, it fired only on restatements the merges missed. The measurements are in the machine-text research (research-machine-text.md in the proofread roadmap).

Default decision

The code is PRF7015. The decision depends on the kind of text judged:

Kind Default
agent-compact off

Changing it

A decisions table sets this rule to deny, advise or off, for everything judged or for the files a glob matches. Proofread reads the table from the file its -decisions flag names:

{
  "rules": {"compact-duplicate": "deny"},
  "paths": {"blog/**": {"compact-duplicate": "off"}}
}

rules applies to every file. A glob in paths applies to the files it matches, and the last match wins. A rule set to off never reports.

Seeing it

A finding names the rule, its code and the decision that applies, and links here:

{"rule": "compact-duplicate", "code": "PRF7015", "decision": "off", "url": "https://eli.gladman.cc/magus/reference/proofread/compact-duplicate/"}

proofread rules prints this entry with every other rule's.

Glossary

Op

A single tool-native command a target composes (long form: operation); the middle of the work hierarchy (Spell to Op to Target). Op in full.

CI

An ordinary target you compose yourself with ctx.needs; magus does not hardcode its stages. It is the anchor magus affected ci keys off, and ci strips the rw charm. CI in full.

Agent

A model working through an agent host such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or OpenCode. magus treats an agent as one more caller of its CLI, MCP tools and console, held to the same checks as a person. Agent in full.

Skill

A packaged set of instructions an agent host loads when a task matches its description: a directory holding a SKILL.md. magus ships its magus-* skills in the binary and writes them with magus agent install. Skill in full.

Run

One target executing under one magus invocation, such as magus run test web or magus affected ci. A run keeps its captured output behind an output reference. Every magus run is a run whether or not any job asked for it; see Job for how the two relate. Run in full.
